A Talk: Monaco’s writer-in-residence Jeanne Sutton explores Irish heroines in migrant fictions

Join writer in residence Jeanne Sutton at the Princess Grace Irish Library, March 5th.

Jeanne Sutton, the Spring 2026 bursary recipient from The Ireland Funds Monaco, is currently finishing her residency at the Princess Grace Irish Library. Her tenure concludes this month, but not before she shares insights into her craft and the literary figures that inspire her work.

On Thursday, 5th March at 7pm, Sutton will lead a focused discussion on Irish heroines in migrant fictions. This session moves beyond academic theory to examine why specific texts resonate so deeply with modern readers. Drawing from her background as the 2025 John McGahern Award winner, Sutton will analyze the intersection of historical research and creative storytelling.

Explore the evolution of the migrant narrative

The evening includes readings by local amateur dramatists, providing a live look at the stories under discussion. A highlight of the event is a reading from Sutton’s novel in progress, “Monster Island”. This historical work, which secured second place at the Stockholm Writers Festival 2024, follows a young woman emigrating from 19th century Ireland to New Zealand.

Sutton will invite the audience to participate in a dialogue regarding what these migrant stories reveal about Ireland across the past, present, and future. For those interested in the technical aspects of historical fiction or the trajectory of contemporary Irish writing, this session offers a direct connection to a writer currently making a significant impact on the scene.
