Jensen Huang: “The best career advice I got was from a gardener”

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang shared a story that sums up his approach to work and life.

He said he doesn’t wear a watch because “now is the most important time.” The best career advice he ever got came from a gardener in Kyoto, who spent his days carefully tending to a massive moss garden using just bamboo tweezers. When Huang asked how he could possibly manage such a huge garden with such simple tools, the gardener replied, “I have plenty of time.”

That message stuck with Huang. He said he focuses on the present, does his best work every day, and lets opportunities come to him rather than constantly chasing them.

“I’m not ambitious in the traditional sense,” he said. “I don’t aspire to do more — I aspire to do better at what I’m currently doing.”

He even joked that Nvidia has no long-term strategy — its “long-term plan” is just to focus on what it’s doing today. For him, success comes from learning constantly, giving your best effort, and trusting that good things will follow.
