Meta’s AI app to challenge ChatGPT is here — and yes, it’s ‘social’

Meta (META) announced the launch of its own “social” AI app on Tuesday as it tries to challenge ChatGPT’s market dominance. The app is centered around voice conversations so the AI can get to know you.

Meta has unveiled a new standalone AI app, expanding on the technology already integrated into Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Centered on voice interactions, the app is designed to become a more personalized, conversational assistant that “gets to know you,” according to Meta.

“Meta AI is built to get to know you, so its answers are more helpful,” the company said in its press release. “It’s easy to talk to, so it’s more seamless and natural to interact with.”

Described as “social,” the app offers a feed where users can share how they’re using Meta AI and highlights relevant posts from friends. It also pairs with Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses, allowing for seamless transitions between devices.

“This is the beginning of what is going to be a long journey,” said CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a Facebook Reel. The app runs on Meta’s Llama 4 model and aims to be “your personal AI.”

Meta’s investment in AI is massive, with plans to spend $60–$65 billion on related infrastructure in 2025, including a new two-gigawatt data center — a site that could cover a large part of Manhattan. and a significantly expanded AI team.

“We built a new thing for you,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a Reel posted to Facebook. “There are almost a billion people who are using Meta AI across an app, so we made a new standalone app.”
