It was a significant year for Monaco

In his 2026 New Year’s address, Prince Albert II looked back on a 2025 defined by significant diplomatic expansion and a strengthened role for Monaco on the world stage.

The past year marked a transformative chapter for Monégasque diplomacy, defined by a strategic blend of environmental activism and high-level international cooperation. From hosting the groundbreaking Blue Economy and Finance Forum to welcoming world leaders for historic summits, Monaco has successfully positioned itself as a vital mediator in global affairs.

Under the Sovereign’s guidance, the Principality has not only expanded its diplomatic network to 165 countries but has also set the stage for its upcoming leadership role in the Council of Europe, proving that a small nation can drive significant global change.

Key Diplomatic Milestones of 2025

  • Environmental Leadership: The hosting of the Blue Economy and Finance Forum (BEFF) in June 2025 was a standout success, raising €8.7 billion in financial commitments for ocean protection.
  • Historic State Visit: Monaco welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron for a rare two-day state visit in June—the first of its kind since 1984—reaffirming the “common destiny” shared between the two neighbors.
  • Global Expansion: The Principality established new diplomatic relations with Micronesia, Singapore, and Trinidad and Tobago, bringing its total diplomatic network to 165 countries.
  • Council of Europe: Monaco prepared to take on the historic Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, focusing on child protection and human rights for 2026.
  • High-Level Diplomacy: The Sovereign welcomed numerous international figures, including President Lula da Silva (Brazil), Prince William, and President Rodrigo Chaves Robles (Costa Rica) during major summits at the Grimaldi Forum.

It is all together that we will make the year 2026 a great and beautiful year, for Monaco and for each of us.
