Springbok legend Tendai Mtawarira to sponsor 13th Ste Dévote Rugby Tournament

The 13th edition of the Sainte Dévote Rugby Tournament is set to bring energy, talent, and international camaraderie to Monaco on April 25 and 26, with a special guest lending his star power to the event. Former South African rugby star Tendai “The Beast” Mtawarira has been named sponsor of this year’s tournament, organised by the Monegasque Rugby Federation (FMR), chaired by Princess Charlène, in partnership with her foundation.

A legendary figure in the sport, Mtawarira brings his world champion experience and passion for youth development to the event, where 24 teams from 21 different countries will compete in the under-12, 7-a-side tournament. Representing nations from as far as New Zealand to Ecuador, young players will gather not just for the love of the game, but also to celebrate cultural exchange and friendship through sport.

“Being part of this tournament is a great honour,” Mtawarira shared. “It’s about inspiring the next generation, and this event offers young players a chance to grow, compete and connect.”

The two-day event, held at the Stade Louis-II, promises more than just rugby matches. Free activities will be available for children aged two and up, including the return of the popular Ninja Box obstacle course and the “Tot’s Rugby” session for the youngest aspiring players. Children and young adults with disabilities will also take part in specially designed workshops as part of the “Rugby for All” initiative.

The action begins at 2 p.m. on April 25, with an early morning workshop for local schoolchildren. Later that day, at 4:23 p.m., the traditional Trophée Sainte Dévote match between Monaco and Lucciana will take place, honouring the enduring friendship between the Principality and Corsica.

The grand opening ceremony follows on April 26 at 10 a.m., setting the stage for an exciting afternoon of finals, culminating in the trophy presentation at 5:15 p.m. As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on the field to see if any team can dethrone the Blue Bulls, champions of the past two editions.
