The Story
The BBC is dealing with a major internal crisis over claims of editorial bias.
A leaked memo targeted a Panorama documentary, “Trump: A Second Chance?,” that aired just before the 2024 US election. It alleged the show misleadingly edited a 2021 Donald Trump speech.
The edit cut out Trump’s instruction to supporters to proceed “peacefully.” By splicing in a quote spoken almost an hour later, the footage falsely suggested he was directly inciting the Capitol Hill riot.
The scandal quickly reached the top. BBC Chairman Samir Shah issued a personal apology for what he called an “error of judgment.” The controversy also contributed to the unexpected resignations of both the Director-General and the BBC News CEO.
President Trump has since escalated the fight. He is now demanding billions and has formally threatened a $5 billion lawsuit against the public broadcaster.
The BBC has apologized for the editing mistake and promised never to air the documentary again. However, the corporation maintains there is no legal basis to pay Trump any compensation.
